Destruction of Habits

You are a slave to habit simply because you consent to be a slave.

Before reading further you should decide definitely that you honestly wish to quit smoking right now and that you have sought a strong Will to do so.

If faithfully done, the following regimes will destroy the tobacco habit.

Regime 1.

You must waste no time over this “habit and must treat the desire, first, middle, last and directly, leaving the habit to take care of itself. Thus, you must banish desire for nicotine by substituting for it desires of other descriptions. Keep the first out of mind. Keep the latter forever in thought.

If you quit for a few months and then start again, many will say that you are hopeless. You clearly do not yet genuinely desire freedom. You continue to smoke because you desire indulgence, or because you do not desire reform. Your appetite is your plea; but your desire lies under your appetite. Were you confronted by a loaded rifle, with the absolute assurance of being shot to death for lifting a cigarette, you would surely defer the indulgence because desiring life is stronger than one smoke. The contrary is often asserted, but it is simply the exaggeration of deluded martyrdom.

Regime 2.

Some physicians recommend for the tobacco habit the incessant eating of peanuts, inasmuch as a condition of the stomach seems to be engendered by them which revolts against nicotine. If you can nauseate yourself every time you crave tobacco you will cease to desire it. It is said that milk has the same effect in some cases.

Regime 3.

Eat heartily plain food, especially any kind which does not seem to agree with tobacco, and keep forever in mind the goal of freedom. Eat peanuts or drink milk instead of indulging your appetite in habit. Fix deeply in your soul the conviction that the difficulty is not insuperable, but will yield in time. This is true, because the entire physical system tends to adapt itself to new conditions. Continue these reform conditions long enough and you will be free.

Regime 4.

Don’t talk about your effort and don’t dwell upon your suffering. Keep yourself busy and outside as much as possible. Contrive to get a great amount of sound sleep every day. Take a noon nap daily. Flood your stomach with pure water day after day. If the weather permits, perspire freely. Put tobacco out of sight. Keep it out of mind. When the thought arises, banish the suggestion instantly. As you do so, and in order to do so, set the mind upon other matters.

Regime 5.

Don’t suffer yourself to fall into the “dead stare”, that unconscious standstill of mind which occasionally seizes people who are fighting these battles. Anticipate such spells, and throw yourself into action requiring no concentration of thought.

Regime 6.

Don’t pity yourself. Entertain no sympathy for your suffering nor your weakness. Don’t play the martyr. Don’t class yourself with heroic reformers. Don’t nurse your egotism. Don’t imagine that you are doing some great thing. Forget all these temptations. People have fought on in battle with shattered arms. You can absolutely forget tobacco if you determine to do so.

Regime 7.

Don’t ask God to cure these habits. All such “cures” have been psychological. God is the author of a true psychology and religious experience is psychological, to be sure; but God works through His own laws, one of which, underlying the crowning achievement of moral realms, soul development, is that Divine help is given to no human being in an especial manner or degree who can achieve success by obedience to ordinary principles of right living.

A person once declared that “the Lord had taken away his craving for tobacco.” When closely and persistently questioned, he confessed that there had been times at first wherein his throat and mouth had felt “raw,” one of the symptoms of tobacco denial. He had forgotten his desire in his intense religious excitement. Here was “Divine assistance,” of course, but without any distinctively supernatural element.

A book on curing the tobacco habit, by Mae Levy, has among others, the following “dictums “:

-Having decided to quit tobacco, keep your thoughts upon the grand benefit soon to come, and do not allow yourself to be dissuaded from your purpose.
-Continue with tobacco as usual for two weeks. If you feel that you are making such progress that you can cease the use of tobacco before the fixed time, do not stop completely, reduce the quantity if so inclined.
-Sip all liquids and other soft foods, allowing them to remain for a brief period in the mouth before swallowing. Chew every mouthful or bite of solid or dry food many times before swallowing.
-Avoid foods or drinks that disagree with you.
-Consume eight glasses of liquid, non alcoholic and non gaseous, daily, between meals,
-Practice deep breathing every morning and night.

Faith, conceived as the affirmatively expectant attitude of the whole self, is one of the mightiest powers in this world. It is the fundamental element in auto suggestion.

You are therefore invited to make your entire thought and life a suggestion to your self that these directions, faithfully carried out, will infallibly eliminate from your nature the habits indicated.

But remember, faith without works is merely a ‘say-so.’ Real faith is confident action toward a goal. The continuation of such action measures the kind and power of faith supposed. You should, therefore, determine to persevere, a thousand years if necessary. But let it be remembered that mere resolution is only one half of real determination. Some people resolve, and then resolve again, never achieving victory. Others put ‘bite’ into the matter in hand once for all, and do not seem to know how to let go. The only cure for resolution is determination, for determination is just doing the thing resolved upon.

The soul that says, “I am going to overcome, will very likely fail. The leverage runs too far into the future. A valiant Will always acts on a short lever. You should, therefore, declare: “I am overcoming! The thing is now being accomplished! The matter in hand is mastered. This may seem a trifle false, but it is more than a trifle true if you really mean it. When you swear the needed thing now, it is by so much already done in your Will, and a good deal of it, unknown to you, is accomplished in the concrete.

If there is not enough will left in you to desire reform, you must consult a physician for a “cure”; and if this doesn’t work then to be sure, you must go on as a slave.

Lighting a cigarette, inhale its smoke and burn up the last bit of snuff, extinguish the cigarette and after a while, repeat. Hundreds of times, day after day, the attitude of millions of people everyday. Why? What reasons are those that result from this custom so detrimental to the habit of smoking and so popular it has become the most important health epidemic of the XXI century?

We all have a reason to smoke

When smokers were asked why they smoke, they often give very different answers: “I smoke because I like”, “It has become a habit,” “It helps me relieve stress,” “I can concentrate,” “It much smoke and not hurt me “” I know it’s bad for your health, but I can not leave “… But no explanation is sufficient by itself, and many of them do not even correspond to reality or not be generalized to other smokers. However, viewed as a whole, are very enlightening and can reach a real understanding of the situation.
Unfortunately, we have come to live with the very young snuff. Chocolate cigarettes that many have “smoking” or ever bought our children are now a subtle and early approach to the snuff.

Understanding the fact of smoking as a vital process

Smoking is not an act that is based on a specific reason. It is a process involving different phases. And each stage, each stage of this process, have “their reasons”. But we are always “tempted” by the snuff, this attraction is much stronger for smokers, because with each cigarette are creating a new reason to remain trapped by the seductive power of the snuff. And these temptations are presented in different ways and for different reasons in each of the stages of this process.
The influence of society

The snuff is known to us all soon. A potential future smokers and nonsmokers. Directly or indirectly. Our environment is a world in which snuff is rampant, is found everywhere and more associated with various human activities.

The advertising shows him as an excellent means to achieve pleasure, happiness and freedom. And in our society, little knowing her health risks, is used as a means of relating to others, and as a tool ideal for building many everyday activities. Is it a matter of family or character?

Although some studies have found that genetic inheritance may have to do with smoking, neither this nor other causes (such as the predisposition of people with an extrovert or impulsive character) are crucial.

Smoking is a complex set of behaviors and events caused by multiple and diverse causes. It can be seen from a unique perspective, and understood only with a specific reason, but must be approached from the understanding of a complete set of reasons.
Comprehensively understand the reasons leading to start in smoking and help us to perpetuate control over the snuff, and then get to leave.

The smoker on the couch

The data are unequivocal: to smokers whose feeding was maintained for 8 months find it easier to leave than those whose snuff breastfeeding was shorter, so theoretically received less maternal care during feeding. But the Freudian idea that smoking is an “erotic attitude” is just another of the many reasons that can motivate her smoking.

Not knowing the real impact that smoking has on health (or little value) is one of the reasons to start and stay in the consumption of snuff.

The first cigarette

Memories of smokers are almost all about it: almost all began in snuff consumption during adolescence. Something that support scientific studies: according to World Health Organization, over 60% of youth have tried snuff for 15 years and over one third of all of them are active smokers before age 18.

Adolescence

Being something forbidden and reserved for elders, smoking is something that, by imitation, can access a “privilege” of adults. Furthermore, smoking, the “rebellious” teen skips adult standards and integrates into your group of friends. Moreover, the teenager, who is in a stage where they are forming their personality, is very vulnerable to anything that gives you power, adventure and freedom, as it needs to assert itself and his (and the sooner the better) the values and behaviors that adults enjoy.

One in three young people is smoker before he reached age 18.

The glamor

And who gives the teenager all those values? The snuff industry, through advertising. With only light up we become a great seducer, are “interesting”, rode horseback in full Grand Canyon or we become the sexiest woman in the world and released. And all transmitted through spectacular images of young and slender, athletic, healthy and fun, violators of standards and, above all, free.

Two very influential factors in teenagers are to feel integrated into the group of friends and advertising that bombards using advertisements that associate smoking with great personal achievement and the feeling of freedom.
How do you get depend on the snuff?

But in addition, there are a number of “myths” about snuff that make young people end up smoking just begun routinely. On one side are the false belief that snuff reassures, gives confidence and controls weight, and the ignore and belittle the risks of smoking to health. On the other hand, is the tolerance and complicity of the family and friends, and the ease with which the adolescent can access the snuff, as it is offered and is found everywhere, and it also becomes economically feasible to get it.

After the first few puffs are due the first symptoms of intoxication (cough, breathlessness, nausea and dizziness) and learned to “swallow” the smoke without the body would reject it. And sporadic smoking start smoking every day. As you learn to make use of snuff, the number of cigarettes is growing.

Smoking is causing physical dependence, and like any other drug, each time allows for greater tolerance for consumption, while a sharp decrease in the usual amount causes mono. And that in a short space of time, which gives way to the stage of addiction, which is achieved physical dependence.
Forms of dependence

The consumption of snuff is a process that is just mixing various types of dependence: a physical dependence on nicotine is motivated to add other types of dependency also influential: psychological, social, sign …

Each puff proporciorna snuff a new partnership with some of the situations of everyday life: a smoker of 15 cigarettes daily paqueft pulls a cigarette from about 100,000 times in fifteen years, and gives more than one million deployed. This creates in him a strong and important sign by the dependence snuff. And above all its utensils (lighters, ashtrays, snuff packages, etc..) Are elements which unite him even more to his habit of smoking.

Therefore, the smoker who decides to leave the snuff will not only get rid of their dependence on nicotine, but must face and break every one of the chains that bound him to snuff, not “vigilant” in any time after the “defeated” only one of them.
Buying on the Internet

In California (USA) an initiative called “Proposition 10″ returned in late 1998 to increase by 50% the price of the packs. With this measure, in just half a year have reduced consumption by 30%, although, as against strategy, more than 20 tobacco companies based in other U.S. states with lower taxes on snuff began to sell to Californians its product by mail through the Internet.
Nicotine

One of the more than 4,000 toxic substances in snuff smoke is nicotine, a drug that is highly addictive capacity. When the smoker takes a drag on his cigarette, a certain amount of this substance reaches the brain in just seven seconds, and acts on it by providing their experience increased pleasurable sensations. This physiological reaction that a smoker will develop physical dependence on nicotine, which leads you to eat more snuff and will also “force” to continue, since not smoking soon suffer reactions such as anxiety, nervousness, irritability etc.., which are the symptoms of withdrawal syndrome “which occurs because of the absence of nicotine.
Always a cigarette … for every occasion

In addition, smoking is ultimately essential to interact and be in society, and is “crucial” to make important decisions or to control moods: if you are angry, smoking calms, if you’re bored, distracted, if sad, consoles, after the success, reward, and after the failure, alleviate or punishes. Above, appeases hunger, awakens in the morning, concentrating at work or during the hours of study, improves digestion after meals … Not forgetting, of course, smell and taste of snuff, to enjoy “a good burner, and security and calm that give the right to carry a full package for all situations. In short, a long list of uses that give the false label of being an easy resource to handle any situation, emotional or physiological.

Factors that lead to start smoking

* Environmental factors such as the influence of advertising, and the large supply, ease and affordability of snuff for youth.
* Social factors such as the influence of family, friends and social acceptance of snuff and the ignorance of the consequences of the habit.
* Personal factors of psychological and especially related to the formation of character and personality during adolescence.

Factors that cause dependence snuff

* Pharmacological factors, primarily the great addictive capacity of nicotine, which produces pleasure and whose absence causes the “monkey”.
* Factors of custom and habit-formation related to the utility that gives each cigarette, as well as the circumstances surrounding smoking.
* Factors sensory and gestural, as “pleasant” odor and flavor of snuff for smokers, and the continuous repetition of gestures as puffs a cigarette and take in any circumstance and occasion.

Forms of presentation and consumption

Historically, the snuff is consumed in many different ways (chewing, sniffing, sucking, smoking, and even drinking and enema). Then, the industrial processes have multiple skins and trademark original snuff sheet. While different forms of presentation and ways to consume not affect the way our health, despite all the hurt seriously.

The floor of the snuff

The snuff is the common name is known in the plant Nicotiana tabacum, one of the forty species of the genus Nicotiana, turn the family Solanaceae, native to America, and which also includes potatoes, peppers, eggplants and tomatoes, which, however, contain a distinctive element of the plants of the genus of snuff: nicotine. Large leaves (water is 80% and the rest dry matter), grows in hot and humid with temperatures ranging between 18 and 22 ° C.

Of his four different varieties (brasiliensis, bavaniensis, Virginia and purpurea), mode of cultivation, fermentation and careful way, and the manufacturing process, there arise the different types and brands of snuff to be sold in the market.
Industrial Treatment

Wait until the plant to flower so that their leaves grow to the maximum, and then collected and air-dried cured or artificially in a controlled atmosphere, which reduces the percentage of water from the plant for 80 to 18%.

The curing or drying process does change the final flavor and aroma of the leaves: the snuff of curing artificial atmosphere (35% of trade) are pale yellow and with high rates of nicotine and tar, the air-cured is also colored and used as filler and flavoring support. The cure is in the air and the sun is used in the blend of American cigarettes and cigars inside. And the fire-cured, for snuff, pipe and chewing snuff.

The type of curing snuff leaf aroma and taste will determine your final, and therefore, the many varieties offered in the market.

Were dried leaves stacked packages, which are subjected to the action of bacteria, fungi and yeasts that cause complex chemical reactions that make smokeless. These are then submitted to a large number of manipulations (most secret) that give the typical flavor of snuff brand through processes such as wetting or drying, the roast and the addition of flavorings and flavoring.

The flavorings and flavoring in many cases enhance the addictive power and increased consumption of snuff.
Some interesting facts

Now grown to 75% of clear modalities for snuff or blonde and 25% for black snuff. The snuff is blond or black depending on the color of the leaf.

In Spain, and among male smokers, consuming only 2.6% pure (figure arrives, however, by 6% in the case of smokers aged above 45 years). Only 0.1% are consumers of snuff pipe. Women who smoke cigarettes consumed exclusively.

The figures for the consumption of products of “snuff smokeless as snuff and chewing snuff are insignificant in Spain. However, in countries like the U.S. the chewing snuff consumption figures reached 8%, and in Holland is quite common to simultaneously smoking with snuff.

It is starting to give. alarm about the launch by the snuff industry of other products derived from smokeless snuff. In response to the growing social taboo against smoking in public, the tobacco companies have sought more socially acceptable ways to administer nicotine. Today is already on sale in the U.S. a type of pill that contains nicotine, flavored with cinnamon and looking like a candy for children.
Different presentations

Today is the cigarette as enjoying greater popularity and acceptance (grout or unfiltered, blond and dark, light, semilights or “whole”). We are far behind in the consumption figures cigar, pipe, and two forms of what has come to be known as “snuff smokeless” snuff (snuff powder that is inhaled) and chewing snuff.
The deception of snuff “light”

Given that among smokers there is a growing interest in the risks involved in the snuff, the tobacco companies have flooded the market with light cigarettes, accompanying misleading advertising claims about the product they are less hazardous to health.

We must make it clear that the “benefits” of consumption are far from optimal, because if it is true that this type of presentation offers the “advantage” of lower nicotine and tar than regular cigarettes, the need for particular dose of nicotine causes the smoker puffs made longer and consume more cigarettes.

Moreover, this natural desire to satiate the required dose, the tobacco companies have added reinforcements that put fitr softer than flatten more than normal to get them between his fingers and forced to suck more power and intensity to get inhale the smoke.

If they chose only to reduce the risks, should consider these facts.
Degrees of toxicity

While all use of snuff entails serious health risks, irrespective of the type that is consumed, it is important to bear in mind that there are significant differences between one kind and another, both from the standpoint of toxicity and addiction .

The large number of manipulations to which is referred to the original plant manufactured snuff make a product more harmful than natural snuff.

If we focus on the snuff smoked, the risk is greater the larger the number of cigarettes smoked, rather than the years it has been smoking and higher the content of tar and nicotine from each cigarette. In addition, we take full account other factors that influence the toxicity of cigarettes.
Toxicity Factors

* The form of cultivation, time of harvesting, curing and fermentation rate and type of additives change the quantity of nicotine and toxic substances.
* Once burned, the blonde snuff contains a much higher concentration tar than the black snuff, which, however, almost always contain higher amounts of nicotine.
* The amount of toxic substances that are inhaled increases if the environment is heavily polluted smoke snuff.
* The filter reduces the number of smoke particles that pass into the body during the set, and therefore, the toxicity of what is inhaled. The same effect, but greatly increased, get special nozzles, which add an additional filtering of toxic substances.
* The snuff pipe and cigar are less addictive than cigarettes, because nicotine is absorbed through the mouth, without the smoke is swallowed. Although the amount of nicotine absorbed is similar, cigars and pipes in the absorption occurs much more slowly, reducing their potential for addiction on the one with the rapid absorption of nicotine in cigarettes, which reaches the brain in only 7 seconds.

If we smoke, we could look for “solutions” to reduce toxicity and the risk of addiction by the consumption of snuff through special nozzles or least toxic types of snuff. Filters and special nozzles only reduce the amount of nicotine and tar inhaled, but not the amount of carbon monoxide, a gas snuff smoke responsible for a large number of cardiovascular diseases in the smoker.
The most dangerous areas

The composition of the smoke of the set depends on the type of snuff and multiple factors such as depth of inhalation, the combustion temperature, the length of cigarette paper porosity and the presence of additives and filters. Therefore, apart from those types of snuff choose less toxic, should also take into account that the concentration of toxic substances is greater as there are puffs on his cigarette, reaching the last puff twice toxicity in the first.
Ranking of toxicity of different types of snuff

1. Unfiltered cigarettes
2. Black cigarettes without filter
3. Filter cigarettes
4. Black cigarette filter
5. Cigar
6. Blond-tipped cigarette
7. Black-tipped cigarette
8. Pipe line
9. Pipe bend
10. Cigar, the tip

This post is dedicated to all the smokers out there who are trying to quit but are struggling. You are not alone.

I want to introduce someone who has recently quit smoking, who might help you get motivated to start your own journey. Dave is now entering a little over his 66th day of being nicotine free. That is a long time for a smoker. He has been generous enough to post his journey towards becoming an ex-smoker on a blog, so any one who wants to quit can read and learn from his experience. Check it out at Dave’s journal.

Blogging is a great way to help you quit smoking. For one, the written word is more powerful than the spoken word. Once you write something down, you bring the thought to life and automatically commit to making it happen. I wrote a post on goal setting sometime ago, you might want to check it out.

Secondly when you start a blog about wanting to quit smoking, you are exposing yourself to the whole world. People who find your blog will start commenting and encouraging you to quit smoking when this can be especially encouraging when things seem tough. It’s not always easy coping and this is where the power of community can help you push through, even if it’s only for an extra day.

From my experience the longer you quit the more confident you are in being able to stay quit. On days where you relapse and it seems like you have lost hope, your readers can help motivate you to get back on track to quitting. It becomes easier to stay committed.

It is encouraging when you have support from people all over the world who have either been in your shoes or are going through the same experiences.

If you want to quit, I highly recommend you start a blog as a first step. The secret with starting a quit smoking blog is to be honest and update your status regularly. If you don’t know how to create one then leave a comment under this post and I will help you out.

It really does not matter what method you use or what it takes as long as you make an initiative and this is what I want you to take from Dave. I say good for him and congratulations. Please visit his blog and leave him some encouraging words.

Thank you for your time.

Throughout the history of the tobacco companies they have marketed their products with well thought out campaigns utilizing all of the media, including the movies, television and musicians. The images of Hollywood stars and musicians smoking have had an influence on people’s decisions to start smoking. People, and especially young people, see these images, and imagine how cool they would look if they smoked.

There are other reasons people start smoking, but more often than not, it is because of the image that is created in their minds through the use of these clever advertising campaigns. They see it in the movies, on television, at concerts, etc.
In some parts of the world smoking is viewed as a “rite of passage. Seeing third world youngsters, some of them 10 years and younger, is not unusual.

Most people get started smoking with their first cigarettes given to them by older friends or family members. Part of the reason they smoke is to be a part of the crowd that they admire or people they aspire to emulate. Many times their peers encourage them to start, and even show them how it is done, even how to do things such as blowing smoke rings, etc.

It is about image more than anything else as most people would agree that the first cigarette is certainly not pleasant. If food tasted that bad most of us would never eat again. It becomes a challenge to overcome the coughing, burning throat, the choking, the burning of the eyes. If something is seen to be cool or fashionable then there will be many people who will do it simply to be accepted by their peers.

The majority of people find that smoking tastes bad and makes them feel bad until they become accustomed to the taste then those feelings disappear. By that time they have started to become addicted to the tobacco and nicotine and a new problem presents itself.

Statistics show that the majority of people who smoke wish they had never started, if only they could wind back the clock they would certainly never have started. They fool themselves into thinking that they can quit any time they want. After a few tries at quitting they buy into the notion that quitting is too hard, they don’t have the will power, it’s really not as bad as people say. They begin to justify their habit with comments like;

•	I really enjoy smoking,
•	It relaxes me,
•	It keeps me thin.
•	I can quit any time I want.

After a very short time the addictive nature of tobacco and nicotine start to control the smoking habit, which makes so many people continue to smoke long after they realize the many ways it is affecting their health. Knowing that they are shortening their life is generally not enough incentive to quit.

Fortunately the message about the real dangers that smoking brings to the smokers health and longevity is getting out, and it is becoming a more unacceptable practice and not seen as fashionable in many areas of society.

It is becoming harder to find places where it is even legal to smoke, the sight of smokers huddled outside of workplaces and many public places, even in bad weather, is becoming more common.

Many states have in recent years raised the taxes on tobacco products to very high levels, while this is not a very effective way to convince people to quit, it is having some impact.

Jim Newell is the publisher of http://www.QuitSmokingNow101.com – “Quitting smoking is hard to do…We Can Help!”
A2+ pack a day smoker, for more than twenty five years, Jim quit smoking fir good in January 1986.

A nicotine patch is specifically designed to help reduce your craving for nicotine. The way it does this is by delivering a steady dose of nicotine throughout your day. The patch works by delivering a regulated dose of nicotine into your bloodstream through the skin. This steady introduction of nicotine helps to maintain your nicotine level throughout the day. While this level is generally lower than if you were still smoking, it’s enough to eliminate withdrawal symptoms, especially the cravings.

The initial patch program goes on for about six weeks. This is the most difficult period and when the dosage will be highest. After this period, the patch prescribed will be of a lower dosage for two weeks and then a still lower dosage for the last two weeks. At this point, you should be smoke free.

Most nicotine patches are not available over the counter. They must be prescribed by a physician. Since the average cigarette contains only one milligram of nicotine, the prescription will be based upon the number of cigarettes you normally smoke in a day. As in all nicotine replacement treatment programs, it’s vital to let your doctor know of any medical conditions you may have.

There is one brand that can be bought over the counter. It’s a fifteen milligram dose and is worn only during the day. Before you go to bed at night, you remove the patch and toss it out. In the morning, you start the day with a fresh one.

There can be some side effects when using a nicotine patch to quit smoking. These can include a rash or skin irritation such as itching or burning around the patch itself. On occasion, a patch can cause nausea or dizziness. In addition, you’ll want to refrain from smoking when using the patch. Otherwise, you risk the potential for a nicotine overdose. You can wear a nicotine patch on your arms, back, or any other place that’s hairless and clean and provides a good surface.

Tip 1: Rise above the cravings

Imagine the cigarettes as crutches. You?ve always had these crutches to lean on and soon, it becomes impossible to walk without them. The important thing to learn is that as soon as you walk on your feet again, they?ll quickly regain strength. It may be a little known fact, but about half of what a smoker inhales from his cigarette is pure air. The next time you?re hit with a craving, take some deep breaths and relax. You will soon be able to rise above the craving, feel refreshed, and move on.

Tip 2: All the reasons to quit

Why do you want to quit? Do you have children? Do you want to live to see your grandchildren? Are you sick of the smell? Whatever your reasons are, write them down. Keep a daily journal of how you feel and in the very first entry list in bold letters every reason you have for quitting. List things like health reasons, expense, inconvenience, bad breath, or other reasons and make the list as long as possible. Also be sure to list how you WILL feel when you?ve kicked the habit.

Tip 3: The good, the bad and the ugly

After you complete your lists of reasons you want to quit and how you?ll feel after you?ve quit, make a list of the consequences of not quitting. Have other smokers in your family gotten cancer? Have they died? Do they have to speak through a hole in their neck? Will you be unable to pay off debt because you?re always buying cigarettes? Whatever you consequences, be sure to list all of them. As above, be sure to list the consequences (good consequences, of course) of quitting. Keep them to look forward to.

Tip 4: Break time!

Most smokers agree: a cigarette is a break. When quitting, give yourself breaks, but do something. Go for walk, eat a piece of fruit or drink some juice. This is critical because the body will be going through changes expelling all the accumulated poisons. The fruit will aid this process in many ways.

Good luck!

How are these four connected?

Apparently the FDA found small traces of diethylene glycol, an ingredient used in antifreeze, in one sample of electronic cigarette solution they analyzed. They are also concerned that teenagers will get addicted to electronic smoking. How serious are these issues? Are e-cigarettes harmful devices that should be banned? Lets get the facts straight and put all this information into perspective.

Diethylene glycol may be a toxic ingredient but exactly how toxic is it?

1. It is has one-tenth the toxicity of aspirin.
2. It has one-fortieth the toxicity of nicotine (the primary ingredient in electronic cigarette vapor).

Diethylene glycol is also found in everyday consumable products like:

- Toothpaste
- Mouthwash
- Cough syrup
- Wine
- Dog food
- And many others…

You have to wonder why the FDA is focusing so much on the minute traces of diethylene glycol found in one sample when clearly this is a very common ingredient many of us are ingesting regularly.

That’s not to say that diethylene glycol is totally harmless and we shouldn’t have any concerns about it. But when the FDA starts focusing on words like ‘diethylene glycol’ and ‘anti-freeze’ it sure does sound scary. However, a little bit of education on the facts puts it back in perspective doesn’t it? By the way, water is another ingredient found in anti-freeze!

The FDA tends to give the impression that they have regulatory control over nicotine. That is not always the case. They regulate smoking cessation products and claims. That’s why electronic cigarettes are marketed as a smoking alternative and not as a means to quit smoking.

Another “concern” expressed by the FDA is that electronic cigarettes target underage kids. Here is an FDA quote from one of their reports:

“These products are marketed and sold to young people and are readily available online and in shopping malls. They are also available in different flavors, such as chocolate and mint, which may appeal to young people”.

There is absolutely zero evidence that e-cigarettes target teenagers. Just the opposite… the marketing is focused on adults who already smoke and are searching for a healthier alternative they can use in public places. And here is some breaking news: Adults like to shop in malls and enjoy a variety of flavor choices too! Besides, the initial cost of entry for a top of the line electronic cigarette is not practical for most teenagers.

I encourage you to do your own due diligence and research the electronic cigarette to see if this is something that will benefit you. Look at all sides of the story and try to get unbiased information. Right now the FDA appears to be biased against electronic smoking for some reason. Do they have a hidden agenda? Who knows… but I think I detect trace elements of BS in the FDA reports!
