Quit Smoking – Don’t Let Your Emotional Dependence Get in Your Way

Attempting to quit smoking is probably something every smoker has tried to do at least once in their lifetime, but with no success. There are copious amounts of remedies, cures and tips available to help people kick the habit but somehow even with all of this information at hand, very few people mange to succeed the first time around, if at all. The key to solving this problem is taking a look into why it is that people tend to relapse so often.

Some of the numerous ways in which smokers can try to quit include using nicotine patches, smoking fake cigarettes, hypnosis, acupuncture, group therapy or Nicotine Replacement Therapy. The problem however, is not often the actual act of quitting or the decision to do so, but rather maintaining that decision, dealing with the emotional issues and managing to stay clean.

Studies have shown that one of the most essential factors is not letting your emotions get the better of you, since how you feel in a particular moment can directly affect the decisions that you will make. In a nutshell, it is not so much the physical dependence but rather the emotional dependence that people tend to struggle with. This comes into play in varying situations such as when people are in a social setting where they feel inadequate, insecure or uncomfortable. The act of smoking helps to make them feel more secure and less out of place. Other reasons include the fact that many people believe that smoking promotes weight loss and that it helps people to concentrate and focus better. Smokers also tend to rely on their cigarettes in times of stress, anger or disappointment and even sometimes rebellion.

Whatever the reason may be, it is evident that unless the underlying emotional issues are dealt with outright and not pushed under the carpet, the smoker will always struggle with relapsing. This outlook needs to be combined with taking additional measures in order to help curb the physical cravings. Combining these two strategies will give the smoker more of a chance at success than merely attempting to do a quick fix strategy.
